This week, EFPIA held its Annual Meeting focusing on: “Healthy Ageing – A Lifelong Endeavour”.

Ageing is one of the greatest social and economic challenges of the 21st century for European societies. It will affect all the Member States and it will cut across nearly all the EU policy domains.

By 2025 more than 20% of Europeans will be 65 or over, with a particularly rapid increase in the number of over 80 years of age.

Linked to this topic, was organised a public panel discussion that attracted EC officials, industry, media and third party stakeholders.

The panel included Jo De Cock, National Health Insurance Institute, Belgium; John Bell, Head of Cabinet, Commissioner Research & Innovation; John Bowis, moderator and former Member of the European Parliament, Antonia Parvanova, MEP and Alistair Kent, Genetic Alliance UK.

They focused their debate on improving prevention of chronic diseases, improving paying for results rather than procedures, efficiency and innovation in healthcare systems, and research and innovation’s support to health and social security systems in Europe.

Addressing participants, Andrew Witty, EFPIA President and CEO of GlaxoSmithKline said:

“From an industry point of view: it is about being constructive; it is about being focused on our obligation to stay in equilibrium with our customers and partners; it is about being innovative and relevant in terms of the clinical utility of what we bring; it is about ensuring that we deliver value for money, and it is about being open-minded in thinking about business models which allow us to work much more quickly to the solutions”.
